Mōlī Awareness Campaign
Developing awareness and pride in our wildlife.
In 2024, Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges collaborated with Hob Osterlund and Patrick Ching to develop a series of radio PSAs designed to increase awareness of mōlī (Laysan albatross) and work to develop a sense of local pride in these majestic seabirds. Kauaʻi is the only place in the world where mōlī nest amongst humans and it is our kuleana to provide safe places for them to nest, rest and thrive.
The primary nesting grounds for mōlī are on Kuaihelani, or Midway Atoll, where over 2 million birds gather each season. However, these nesting areas are just a few feet above sea level, where the increased frequency of severe storms and rising ocean levels create a dangerous future. However, nesting sights on the North Shore of Kauaʻi and other areas across the high Hawaiian Islands provide a future for these amazing seabirds.
These fun delightful PSAs were written by Hob Osterlund and voiced by Patrick Ching as "Holy Mōlī" in Hawaiian Pidgin. Through them, we are sharing information about mōlī as their annual nesting and fledging cycle evolves across the year. We hope that you enjoy them!
Visit the Kauaʻi Albatross Network to learn more about mōlī and how you can help.
Mahalo nui loa to our friends at KKCR and the KONG Radio Group for airing the series.
