Volunteer with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, operating Hanalei NWR, Hulēʻia NWR and Kīlauea Point NWR, could not fulfill its mission without the support of our community. One way to do that is to volunteer. There are a number of different opportunities available across our three national wildlife refuges that support a variety of schedules, interests and abilities. Plus, one of the benefits of volunteering, is that you are able to visit Kīlauea Point NWR and bring your guests free of charge.
Our Greatest Needs:
Kīlauea Point NWR Perimeter Fence Habitat Management: This new volunteer role will help support habitat maintenance around the new Kīlauea Point NWR predator-resistant perimeter fence. Position Description
Roving Interpreters at Kīlauea Point NWR: The goal of interpretation is to help visitors create a meaningful experience from their visit to Kīlauea Point NWR. Roving interpreters assist by increasing public awareness and understanding of the Fish & Wildlife Service, the National Wildlife Refuge System, the native Hawaiian plant, animal, and cultural resources at Kīlauea Point NWR, and the effects of invasive species, to influence positive changes. Position Description
Habitat Maintenance and Native Plant Nursery: Volunteers assist in enacting the Kauaʻi National Wildlife Refuge Complex Native Plant Restoration Plan, removing invasive plants and caring for native plants.
Avian Botulism Surveyors: Volunteers monitor taro fields and wetland management units for sick and dead birds by walking dikes, searching field perimeters in an assigned area, collecting birds, and accurately recording observations. Position Description
